Description
Up for auction is a lot comprising a hardcover copy of theOld Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender's Guide,
compiled and edited by Leo Cotton (1883-1963) and stamped in gold and black on red cloth, along with a variety of paper items that were laid inside the book, which comes with its original manila mailing envelope, addressed to a gentleman in Framingham, Mass., sometime on or soon after 1967 (the last date printed on the book's copyright page, and the presumed publication date of the drinks recipe book.
The book, which measures 4-1/2 inches wide by 7-1/2 inches high, comprises 150 pages, plus 10 pages of mostly roman-numeral-paginated front matter. The compact title has attractive pictorial end pages -- front and back are colored differently but essentially the same, depicting shelves full of glasses, bottles, and other bar paraphernalia and items. The rear pages, which are mostly red, show the names of various types of drinking glasses and receptacles, with Port, Beer Goblet, Pony, Eggnogg, Claret, Pilsner, and Beer Stein on the top shelf; Delmonico, Sherry, Whiskey Sour, Whiskey, Highball, Old fashioned, Punch Bowl and Cups, Hot Toddy, and Flip on the shelf below; and Saucer Champagne, Cocktail, Cordial, Fizz, Stem, Rhine Wine, Brandy Inhaler, Tom Collins, and Hollow Stem Champagne on the next shelf down.
The title-page spread reads:
OLD Mr. Boston
De Luxe Official
Bartender's
Guide

PUBLISHED BY
MR. BOSTON DISTILLER INC. BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS
On the next page, the earliest copyright date is 1935 and the latest is 1967, with a long list of the various printings following, the 1st printing being January 1935 and the latest (this one) reading "39th printing May 1967." The two lines at the bottom of the page read:
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CATALOG NUMBER: 60-15939
Printed in U.S.A.
The "Acknowledgements" on the next page read:
APPRECIATION IS ACKNOWLEDGED to Joseph DeSoto, founder and chief instructor of the original Boston Bartender's School and to the many other bartenders who contributed their assistance.
EDITOR
I don't think I need to list the many drinks recipes included within, but here's a list of the papers that were laid inside the book, which I acquired recently in a lot of printed items at a central Connecticut book auction:
Detachable mail-in coupon for 2 Pearl-White Pourers
8-1/2 by 11 inch black and white sheet with ad for Old. Mr. Boston cocktail mixes, with a facsimile "hand-written" letter on starting with "Dear Sirs" and praising Old Mr. Boston cocktail mixes (letter is signed "Mr. Mrs. Pat Andrisani," and a P.S. reads "We are not STOCK HOLDERS IN MR. BOSTON But Happy people who love to mix with people and proud to have in our company Mr. Boston Cocktail mix")
8-1/2 by 11 inch black and white sheet with "THE AMAZING HISTORY OF ROCKING CHAIR WHISKEY" on one side and an editorial in the "Lambertsville (New Jersey) Beacon" by Lewis F. Okenica saying how much "he enjoyed the ad and the Rocking Chair Whiskey." [Note that the town in New Jersey is misspelled: it should be "Lambertville".]
Wax-paper sleeve with a blue sheet within reading "Instructions: HOW TO DECORATE WITH LABELS" and then six actual colorful and metal-foil Old Mr. Boston labels, for: Rocking Chair Kentucky Whiskey, Grape Flavored Vodka, Wild Cherry Flavored Brandy, Mint Flavored Vodka, Anejo Virgin Island Golden Rum, and a full quart of Rum.
The overall condition of the drinks recipe book and the inserts is very good (the used, torn, spotted, etc., manila envelope, made out to "J. Norman Longi, 37 Warren Road, Framingham, Mass. 01701" is fair to good). The gold- and black-stamped and -decorated red cloth binding is tight and square, with just minor corner-bumping, edgewear, etc. The pictorial end pages (front and rear imagery slightly different, mostly in hue), as well as all the pages within, are clean and unmarked and look great. There appear to be no annotations, marginalia, underlining, scribbles, etc., within, nor any damage or flaws in the way of missing or clipped pages, water or other liquid damage, tape repairs, large tears, etc. (note that I did not look at each and every page and may have missed something). All the page edges are smooth-cut, uncolored, and clean. The various sheets, labels, etc., within look great, with minor edgewear, chipping, spotting, age-toning, corner bends, etc. There's a bit of a musty odor but no smoky smell to the book, envelope, and various sheets and labels laid in.
This 1967 copy of the
Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender's Guide,
along with various inserts laid in, is being sold AS IS, AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND PICTURED WITHIN. I am setting what I feel is a reasonable starting price for the auction, and there is NO RESERVE. I am also including a Buy It Now price.
Shipping and
handling for the book and inserts: to U.S. addresses (via Media Mail) and to Canada and to Europe, Japan, Australia, South America, and elsewhere in the world (the latter two via First Class International Mail, aka Air Mail, which is now the CHEAPEST method possible abroad).
I recently discovered that some countries, such as Australia and South Korea, are actually a bit more expensive to post packages to than Europe, but at this point in time I'll keep all the non-domestic and non-Canadian prices the same and swallow the difference myself -- unless it turns out to be or more, which I doubt, and in which case I'll ask the buyer for additional money for shipping -- since so few outside the States buy my items, though of course I'm always so pleased when they do!
If you want the book et al. sent more quickly to you (e.g., via Priority or Express Mail), you must request this asap after winning or purchasing it (or beforehand, if possible), and I will adjust the amount accordingly.
I will do my best to send the drinks recipe book and sheets laid in it out to you no more than 2-3 business days following receipt of payment (that is, when eBay informs me that your payment has been posted to or otherwise cleared in my account).
If you are the winner or buyer of this book and inserts, PAYMENT IS EXPECTED WITHIN TWO WEEKS (14 DAYS) FROM THE PURCHASE DATE. If you cannot pay within this time frame, please contact me asap so we can work something out. I'm very flexible and understanding, but I would appreciate communication from you one way or another.
PLEASE NOTE THAT RETURNS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED NOR REFUNDS MADE FOR THIS BOOK, LABELS, AND SHEETS OF PAPER, SO PLEASE READ MY DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY, LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PHOTOGRAPHS I’VE UPLOADED, AND ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT THE CONTENTS OR CONDITION OF THE ITEMS. THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING!
Thanks for looking, and please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions about this 1967 copy of the
Old Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender's Guide
and the various paper contents laid inside.
PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL HAPPILY ADJUST SHIPPING CHARGES FOR MULTIPLE PURCHASES!!!
ALSO, PLEASE NOTE THAT, IF APPLICABLE, eBAY WILL ADD ANY APPROPRIATE STATE SALES TAX TO THE INVOICE.
